A Year's Worth Of Eli Saslow
WHY DO WE COMPETE?
For money: "By offering a chance at instant money and athletic glory, the Ultimate Game had created dozens of awkward unions between poor golfers who wanted to be rich and rich businessmen who wanted to be golfers."
For tradition: "He took a swig and handed back the flask. Then he lifted himself up over a wall and dropped back into the riot."
And for curiosity, ego, opportunity, community, adrenaline and identity. That's what Eli explores through eight great stories . Enjoy.

Re: A Year's Worth Of Eli Saslow
I'm so glad you posted this. Sure it's great storytelling and all, but the idea behind this series is as good at gets. Simple, too. Let's pose a big, smart question (the biggest and smartest in sports): Why do people compete? Then let's actually go to the places where the real answer is. Let's assign a great photographer, take our time with the presentation and actually put some care into the Web application. Oh, and the writer? Eli Saslow might be the most promising sportswriter of his generation. This ought to be anthologized.

Re: A Year's Worth Of Eli Saslow
I don't know what this means, or if it means anything at all, but I've said this before and continue to believe it.
Eli Saslow is the best sportswriter in the country. Well, he was. Now that he's sitting at the big boy's table, I think he is the best newspaper writer in the country. (Yes, I know I just offended like six of my closest friends who are reading this. And, you know, those are the breaks. If you're on this board, you can write.)
Plus, dude can knock back a drink or seven.
Thanks for posting, Bill.

Re: A Year's Worth Of Eli Saslow
I'm amazed how much time and energy the Post took into presenting this online in a great and engaging way. I recently had someone do a audio slide show to go with a story of mine. It took a week for it to get done and it's hidden in a small link on the website.
Like Wright said a week ago or so, I'm more willing to read a long piece like E-Ticket or this online than in a newspaper because I don't have to haul it around for a week. Just bookmark it and read a story a day then kick myself in the face because it's so good.

Eli Saslow is a good sports writer. He's an awful political writer.
